Vintage Vespa Spares...Why?

I see lots of Vintage Vespa scooters were equipped with spare tires.

Why?

It’s handy when you get a flat. I used my spare a couple of times when I rode one.

Well sure the obvious answer is in case of a flat. I presumed motorcycles and scooters rarely got flats though, thus I questioned the "need" for a small (usually) city-bound scoot.

Happy New year sir, and thanks for this very helpful discussion forum.

The older Vespas all have tube tires, so you can't plug in, you can only patch the tube. Having a spare is great because it will work front or back, and can be changed in a matter of minutes. Love those old scoots.

Also, tires were not as robust when that design was born as they are now. I'd also venture that given the situation that gave rise to the Vespa scooter, post-WWII recovery in Europe, most people had to use pretty low quality tires for even then. Who knows? I never thought about how that spare tire design might be looked at today. The mini-cars of that time, like the Isetta and Messerschmitts, are also pretty interesting and clever.
