Gear Oil as opposed to motor oil in Tranny

Postby Charles » Mon Aug 27, 2018 9:09 pm

The service manual calls for the 10w 40w oil (same as engine) because the tranny's gears are considered FINE and the 70-90 is to thick.
This makes sence that Honda would recommend this lubrication because the tranny gears are also like the gears in a regular motorcycle's gear box.

The heavy weight gear oil can be used but it is not recommended.

The service manual for these motors was written in 1984. Other changes were made.

The first 86-87 Helix had a 1200 mile engine oil change schedule others following had 1000 mile schedule. Same engine, newer recommendations.

75w90 gear oil has the same viscosity (40w) as 10w40 motor oil.

Use whatever oil you like. I stick with Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil in the transmission.

Regardless what you use, just change it regularly which is the most important consideration.

My 2006 goes to full red at 1200 miles for oil change. My Service has the gear oil as optional, 75w90 gear oil or motor oil.

Correction

Personally, I'd never run my oil in my Helix to 2000 miles on the same engine oil. Oil starts to degrade in a motorcycle engine at 800 miles.

If what you say is true, why does my 2006 "change oil" meter turn red at 1200 miles?

I think we're getting metric and standard mixed up. My manual says 1200miles (2000km).

I have an original Honda Service manual 1986-2001. The date of issue is July, 1993.

On page 3-3 AFTER '86: ENGINE OIL Replace every 2,000 mi (3,200 km)

I mean that is what is says.

And the 2004-2007 service manual (revised Dec. 2005) says.
Note that this was from a set of inserts to be pasted in the 2004-2007 Service manual. Page.3-3.
NEW
Initial =600mi.(1000km) or 1 month
Regular =Every 1,200 mi (2000km) or 6 months.
