Gas gauge-Does yours read low?

Postby miranda » Thu Sep 10, 2015 12:54 pm

With only 2 bars showing, I feel it's time to fill up, but typically, I fill up with only 1.5 to 1.7 gallons and I believe our Helix tanks hold just over 3 gallons. Why is this? Is my digital display wrong? Does tank have a reserve? What's going on here?

I have three Helix and only one has a working gas gage! So I have the habit of using the trip gage and refilling at 150 miles. And I usually have a gal. still in the tanks. Better safe then sorry!

On mine it gets down to one bar around 150 miles and two gallons gone. I don't know about a real Helix but mine turns red and blinks as it goes into that last gallon.

There is nothing inheritantly accurate about the gas gauge or temperature gauge on a Helix. I can fill my gas tank until its full spilling out the top and I never get all the bars on gauge to the full level. After I drive away, come to a hard stop or FNAR, eight bars will be showing in the cluster, then drops to seven. I use the trip meter for when to fill up with gas. To show how accurate the temperature gauge is, it shows three bars after a cold start. Three bars? Should be zero bars rising to one, then two then....

I was recently told by a guy who I consider to be a Helix expert (140,000 miles on his Helix) that the final red bar comes on with 1 gallon remaining in the tank. At 1/2 gallon, the bar starts flashing. Even with 1/2 gallon, we still have enough range to get to a gas station in most locations. Plan accordingly based on your geography.

I agree you watch that red flashing and you shall be fine and within a gas station's range but instead top off the gas tank when you fuel and it shall help. There!
