backfiring and wont idle.

Postby pyrate » Mon Apr 02, 2018 1:52 pm

I was cruising along at 55 and started to decelerate for an upcoming red light. Suddenly the bike started backfiring and wouldnt idle. I pulled off the road and got it restarted but had to keep a little throttle open to keep it running. Got home and cut it off. Restarted it and it wont idle. Restarted again and revved it. no backfire but wont idle. I had already put approx 18 miles on it today when this happened

My first thought was a clogged jet.
would anyone agree with me.

Its a 95, with 19,095 miles. rebuilt the carb about 3 years ago.
any help would be appreciated
I looked through the forum and found similar issues but nothing that matched what happened to me.
Thanks for your help

Check your carb insulator for cracks or the cab came loose from the insulator. That happens after hitting a bump with no carb insulator holder installed.

Oh, go tell that guy where the ground wire is located in your other post.

looked at the insulator. Looks like there may be a crack in it,
Thanks for the heads up.
Also explained how to trace the ground wire

I removed the carb insulator and discovered a hose connected to nothing. I cant find any place it might go. It runs down the middle of the frame under the seat and takes a turn toward the left and gets hidden by the side panel. I dont have time tonite to dismantle the body but I was wondering if anyone knows where this connects. I cruised the manual and didnt see a hose close to this. I'm thinking it might be a vacuum hose since it is dry inside. My carb insulator is being shipped so i thought i might get a jump on it.
I dont have an account to post a pic. Might hafta open one.

That is a vent hose. The hose end sticking up goes through the round hole clip to the left of the hose end in the picture. Then it connects to the right side of the carburetor.

You will continue to have cracked insulators unless you install the carburetor support bracket from the 2004-07 Helix. The Helix is prone to this because the air tube is elongated and vibrates with the weight of the carburetor attached. See photo.

I replaced the insulator and it still wont idle. I'm leaning towards jet cleaning.

Any help would be appreciated
