no respect for scooters

Postby Scooterboy45 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:57 pm

Rode the helix to work one day last week. Out of 9 motorcycles that I encountered, none returned my wave.(not even a couple of Goldwings). I did get a wave from a kid on a small(probably 50cc)scooter. The next day I took the motorcycle to work. Of the 7 bikes I encountered all but one waved. I guess those who did not wave to the helix have scooter envy!

Normally I dont get anyone waving at me when I am on my helix either. But if I am taking a longer ride I put on my black mesh body armour jacket with leather vest over it that looks like I am wearing colors again and at least half the riders wave at me, then I think they realize I am on a scooter

Once in a great while I see a Helix go by my house, in the country. It does look a little unusual/odd. But, you know, I don't feel unusal or odd when I ride mine! :)
Then again, I am an old fart (68) and I don't care! 8)
Around I get the "sign" maybe 50% of the time.

Also having the Stella I know at times I could not return the "two fingered wave" to other two wheelers. I am either in the middle of a shift or doing something where I can't take my hand off for a moment. Other times when I ride into the sun I don't always see others till it's too late.

If they don't return the wave maybe they are not comfortable taking their hands off the handlebars.

Oh, there is a magazine, Full Throttle Magazine, that covers various MC events. Check out who got the middle pic. Sometimes they do show the Step Through's some love.

No Respect

Postby ssgcarl » Fri Apr 27, 2012 2:12 pm

Sounds like Rodney Dangerfield......"I get no respect, no respect at all"

Seriously, I have very few bikers that don't wave and they usually initiate the wave.

And I think I may have told this before but just a few weeks ago I had a harley rider pull up next to me at a stop light and ask me to pull over to the side. Wasn't sure why at first, but he was interested in what I was riding. Asked all kinds of questions, wanted to know if i I would sell it (no) and said he was looking for something with some speed and yet easy to ride so that his girl friend could ride with him. And he thought that it was pretty cool.

Everyone have a great weekend!

Waveless

Postby blackxlch » Sun May 27, 2012 3:44 am

On my dek top I have saved the account of the Helix' performance while participating in the 1995 Iron butt competition (a run that covers @10,000 mile in 11 days). A Helix finished that run in 22nd place, ahead of Harleys, and many other large bikes. On days when I feel somewhat belittled because no one waves, when I get home I pull up the account of that ride and read it again. It reminds me that maybe the Harley riders shouldn't wave, maybe they should bow.......

Some of the folks on cruisers and Harleys do wave first from time to time. I usually don't see it from the ones who get their custom bikes out occasionally, dust off their immaculate leathers, and ride around town to convince themselves that they're cool. It's usually the guys who haven't showered in awhile, have a few duffel bags on their bike, riding out on highways much farther out than the image-conscious dare to go. In other words, people who ride for the sake of riding, regardless of what they're riding, usually wave to me on the Helix.

Most bikers in the UK hate the Helix (and all other scooters) for whatever reason. I have nothing in common with them and I don't nod or wave. The only exception to this I make is for riders of Honda 90s and (if I ever see one) other Helixes.

Tomorrow I'll be taking Helix and leading a ride ending at the Hells Angels Pig Roast and BBQ. I'll let you know how it turns out if I'm able to type.

Found another way to deal with the waving frustration. I bought my helix last november. A check of the odometer indicated that I have ridden it over 6,000 miles already. So I have taken a small 1 X 3 inch sticky label on which I have written "If you didn't ride 6,000 miles last year don't wave" and placed it on my windshield, Now when I ride and get an average of about one wave a day...I figure that's just about right.
