Should I, or shouldnt I? water pump seal

Postby Phil » Fri Jul 26, 2019 6:10 pm

Quick question, roughly 7500 miles. I've just completed a very extensive service to my helix. Including servicing the complete cooling system. The one think still in the back of my mind it the water pump seal. Should I replace it for piece of mind, due to age. or just let it go till it leaks? Thanks

If you had said 75,000 miles then maybe change the seal but at 7500 the machine is barely run in. Maybe change the coolant but leave the seal alone and go for a ride!

So it's more of a mileage thing, then year.

If It Ain't Fixed-Don't Break It

On the bottom of the water pump housing is a weep hole a.k.a telltale hole (manual 12-6). It is located in the engine block rearward of the the water pump cover. Take a small drill bit and insert it into the hole to maintain the opening. The hole usually gets covered with road dirt and oil. Coolant which seeps past the water pump seal goes to the bottom of the reservior then weeps onto the floor. That's the time to replace the water pump seal.
